Consultant-level outcomes

Everyone Counts – Improving Outcomes for Patients

What are consultant treatment outcomes?

NHS England is committed to making more information available about how services and professionals are performing. The aim is to drive up the quality of care and to help people choose the treatment that suits them best.

This initiative is a central part of NHS England's ambition to ensure every patient gets high quality care, and to build improved services for the future.

On this page you’ll find links to information about individual consultants in a number of clinical areas. This includes some consultants at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. You can look at their results for a range of operations and treatments - to help you make decisions about your care.

The information available for each type of treatment varies, but in all cases you can see how many times each consultant has performed a particular procedure.

If you consult that data and you have any questions about your consultant's performance please speak to your GP or your consultant. There are often good clinical reasons why data varies - and they can explain this to you.

What data is available?

Information for ten clinical areas will be published in the first instance over the next few months:

  • Adult cardiac surgery (heart surgery)
  • Vascular surgery(surgery on veins and arteries)
  • Thyroid and endocrine surgery (surgery on the endocrine glands)
  • Bariatric surgery (surgery to treat obesity)
  • Interventional cardiology (heart disease treatments carried out via a thin tube placed in an artery)
  • Orthopaedic surgery (surgery for conditions affecting bones and muscles)
  • Urological surgery (surgery on the kidneys, bladder and urinary tract)
  • Colorectal surgery (surgery on the bowel)
  • Upper gastrointestinal surgery (surgery on the stomach and intestine)
  • Head and neck cancer surgery

If you do not find results for Chesterfield Royal Hospital this will be because we do not carry out the type of surgery listed (or it is undertaken in partnership with a different hospital). For example, complex vascular operations are carried out at Derby Hospital NHS Foundation Trust - so you would find your surgeon listed under this organisation.

Where can I find the data on consultant treatment outcomes?

It is listed on NHS Choices.
