Emergency Department

Emergency Department

The Emergency Department, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, receives approximately 85,000 new attendances each year.

The department operates a ‘pit stop’ system for all ambulance patients, ensuring a quick hand over from the ambulance crew and a timely assessment to prioritise the patients attending. Immediate observations and investigation can be initiated here, to expedite the patients in most need, and address everyone’s presenting need.
Walk-in patients are seen in conjunction with a local GP service, and patients are ‘streamed’ to the most appropriate clinician for their condition.

Emergency Nurse Practitioners work in this area, seeing patients with minor injuries and illness. The team can see assess, diagnose, treat and discharge patients within set criteria.

The department has 9 A&E consultant doctors supported by staff grades and junior doctors, who undertake a 3-6 month rotation within the department as part of their training.

A team of 55 whole time equivalent nurses supports the matrons, Sue Wootton and Kaye Smedley, along with 10 sisters, one of which is specialised children’s trained nurse. There is senior nursing cover on every shift over the 24 hour period, which is supported by the clinical site matrons out of hours. In hours there a senior leadership team which consists of a Senior Matron, Sam Wain and Clinical Director Bill Bailey.

The department is due to undergo some much needed extension work, to enable it to manage the ever increasing numbers of patients that use the service.
