All breast patients are introduced to one of the breast clinical nurse specialists who are registered nurses and have had specialised training in all aspects of breast care. Patients are offered a named clinical nurse specialist (‘Key Worker’), who will be there to summarise the diagnosis and treatment plan following the initial results appointment. The Key Worker acts as the co-ordinator, by working closely with the specialist surgeons and other clinicians involved in each individual patient's care. This offers continuity for patients, carers and families so they have a point of contact for advice and support as they need it.
They are committed to supporting patients throughout their cancer journey, providing expert advice and guidance on breast disease, specific cancer treatments and potential side effects. They ensure individuals receive psychological and emotional support, as well as providing sufficient information at appropriate stages throughout the treatment pathway. They have also developed advanced skills to meet the growing needs of the service and run independent nurse-led clinics.
Health Care Assistants
Our experienced HCA's assist with the smooth running of our breast clinics. They welcome patients and chaperone in clinics, assisting the doctors or nurses with clinical procedures, ensuring patients' privacy and dignity are maintained throughout. They provide excellent care and emotional support to patients throughout their treatment pathway.
