Physiotherapy helps you lead as high a quality of life as possible. Physiotherapists aim to maintain and restore optimal function through assessment and management tailored to your needs.
At Chesterfield Royal Hospital, the Physiotherapy team provides a range of in and outpatient services for adults and children.
The inpatient Physiotherapy services assess, support, and where possible manage mobility / functional limitations to evaluate risk and enable discharge from the acute services. Our outpatient Physiotherapy services provide specialist assessment and support for various pathologies and injuries.
The Health and Care Professions Council regulates all Physiotherapists and are commonly members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. The Physiotherapy team additionally includes Assistant Practitioners, Technical Instructors, Assistants and Apprentices. Each team member undertakes specialist training to support the provision of safe and effective care based on the best evidence.

The medical Physiotherapy team work closely with our Occupational Therapy colleagues across the inpatient medical wards. We aim to assess and plan discharge from hospital, utilising the ‘home first’ approach, wherever safe and feasible to do so. We work alongside the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure the most suitable discharge plans are in place.
For anyone admitted to the ward, we will gather a social history, including pre-admission mobility and function. We will often carry out transfer, mobility, and stair assessments, and provide equipment to support independence. The Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy teams have elements of shared skills between the two professions, to help reduce the number of duplicated assessments.
The team liaise closely with community services, ensuring any onward referrals are made to help support your discharge.
The adult and paediatric respiratory physiotherapy teams work with people admitted to hospital with both acute and chronic respiratory conditions. The team carry out assessments and interventions aiming to assist with airway clearance, and breathlessness and improve physical function and exercise tolerance. The team also helps plan for discharge from hospital, providing both mobility and functional assessments.

The ACTT (Acute Care Therapy Team) comprises both Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists with support staff including assistants and technical instructors. Each team member has a broad range of specialist skills; therefore, you will usually only require assessment from one of the team.
The team are based in the ‘Acute Care Area’ and covers the Emergency Department, Emergency Management Unit, Short Stay Unit, Medical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), the Acute Frailty Unit, Frailty SDEC and Pearson Ward (frailty ward).
The ethos of ACTT is ‘Home First’ and assessments are carried out to support early discharge from hospital or to prevent admission into the hospital. A range of assessments may be undertaken which include obtaining a social history, completing transfers, and mobility and stairs assessments.
The team provide equipment and walking aids and may refer to other services, such as adult care for care packages or community therapy for follow-up at home if this is required.
Please discuss with medical or nursing staff if you feel you would benefit from an assessment with one of our team members.
